In Newsgroups:

Newsgroups on the Internet function like a cross between a bulletin board and e-mail.Thousands of groups exist for practically any topic. Users read the messages on the newsgroup and e-mail their own, which are then posted to the group for other readers.

There are approximately 22,000  newsgroups of varying popularity and activity. These groups were established by petition by SIGS (special interest groups) to create a community where people of like interests might congregate.  In newsgroups you may do the following:

Read the posts (each post is called a "thread")
Post a response to the entire newsgroup
Email your response directly to the person posting.

Monitoring the posts in the newsgroup associated with your target audience can produce the following marketing benefits.

1. Information about new sites on the WWW which are of interest to the group.
2. A means of making personal contact with people interested in your subject.
3. A place where you can share your views with a community of your peers and potential clients.

In email discussion groups or Listserves:  (Listserv FAQ)

Among the oldest features on the Internet, a Listserv functions like a newsgroup, but messages are sent directly to subscribers via private e-mail. By sending e-mail to the list's address, subscribers may respond to messages or post new ones.

There are over 80,000 email discussion groups and the number grows each day. You can subscribe or unsubscribe whenever you like. Discussion groups can be moderated or unmoderated.

A moderated discussion group is organized by a moderator who recieves the posts from the subscribers and creates a newsletter format on a time to time basis depending on the activity of the discussion. The moderator  performs the following functions:

1. Compiles and organizes all  posts from the subscribers
2. Initiates new discussion topics
3. Carries forward discussed topics to their conclusion. (Or until the group as a whole has tired of the subject)
4. Adds his commentary when appropriate.

The I-sales newsletter is a good example of a moderated discussion group.

At Ezines: An Ezine is an online magazine which features articles from its editors and contributors. Most of them are always looking for appropriate and interesting content and may publish a chapter of your book in exchange for a link to your site.

In chat rooms:  Another very popular Internet feature, this allows Net users to converse in real time via text, audio or even video. The most widely-used is Internet Relay Chat (IRC), a text-only worldwide chat area containing literally thousands of channels for any interest. Users with Telnet capability can connect to IRC via their ISP. Audio and video chat requires additional hardware and software. Many other chat areas (such as HotWired's talk.com) exist on the World Wide Web; these do not normally require any additional software.
